An exclusive economic zone eez is a sea zone prescribed by the united nations convention on the law of the sea over which a state has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources including energy production from water and wind. 1 this act may be cited as the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone act 1989 and shall come into operation on such date as the minister may by notice in the gazette appoint 2 this . The exclusive economic zone eez of the us extends 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline and is adjacent to the 12 nm territorial sea of the us overlapping the 12 24nm contiguous zone. The concept of the exclusive economic zone is an essential element of the package of compromises and trade offs that constitutes the 1982 convention on the law of the sea it is a concept which has received rapid and widespread acceptance in state practice and is thus now considered by some to be part of customary international law.
